ANNUAL EVENTS:

Women in Science Day - Held November 7th, 2006, November 7th, 2007, November 5th 2008, November 4th, 2009



The Young Scientist Program (YSP) and Association of Women in Science (AWIS - St. Louis) at Washington University in St. Louis hosts Women in Science Day annually in November. Women in Science Day is an exciting one day workshop event that brought approximately 150 young women plus teachers from ten St. Louis City Public High Schools to Washington University (Danforth and Medical School campuses) for hands on activities, speakers, tours of facilities, and a panel composed of women who have succeeded in science from a variety of field and stages in life. The girls can ask quesitons about school and career possibilities as well as hear the stories of these wonderful women.

Some of the many activities have included:

- Home-brewed DNA – DNA Extraction
- Get Physical!

- Minerals and Crystals Growth
- Mars Rovers
- Choose your own planetary science adventure
- Ecology and Evolution: The fate of species
- Paleontology and Sedimentology

The Women in Science Day event combined the missions of the YSP and AWIS organizations to specifically extend science outreach to young women in the St. Louis public schools.

This was a succesful and fun event!! We hope to continue this each year. For more information please see our full report from 2006 or the schedule from 2008.

Organizaitoal Meeting and Book Discussion

AWIS hosted a dinner at Schlafly's Bottleworks, and discussion of: Motherhood, the Elephant in the Laboratory: Women Scientists Speak Out by Emily Monosson

When? Wednesday, February 11th

Time? 6:30-7:00 Organizational Meeting - all welcome to come and help out and see more what we do.

Where? Schlafly's Bottleworks

Plus general good times! Feel free to come even if you do not have time to read the book and/or do not get a chance to RSVP ahead of time.


Fall Brownbag Social and AWIS Informational Lunch

September 22nd in the DUC Graduate Student Center (3rd floor). Bring your lunch and get to know women scientists from other departments. AWIS will provide dessert and short activities centered around issues of interest to women in science.


OTHER EVENTS IN 2008

2008 Fall Kick-off Coffee Hour
- Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00pm, held at the apartment of a steering committee member
- Join AWIS for coffee, tea and tasty snacks. Meet up with current members and find out more about what we do forwomen in science here in St. Louis.

Spring Get-together and Discussion of Articles
- 7 PM, at the Schlafly Bottleworks, on Tuesday April 15th
- If you have time, read the attached article about women in science, several articles from the NYTimes... Schlafly Bottleworks is at 7260 Southwest Ave, Maplewood, MO 63143. It's between Big Bend and McCausland, off of Manchester.

2008 Winter Cider Social
Join AWIS for appetizers and hot cider. Meet up with current members and find out more about what we do for women in science here in St. Louis.
When? January 23rd, from 5:30 - 7pm
Where? Grad students' lounge, 4th floor of Wilson Hall, Danforth Campus (look for our signs)
